Inches vs Pixels: What's the Real Difference?
Understanding the fundamental difference between physical inches and digital pixels.

Inches are a fixed unit of physical measurement — 1 inch is always exactly 2.54 centimeters. Whether you are measuring a sheet of paper, a phone screen, or a piece of wood, an inch never changes.
Pixels, on the other hand, have no fixed physical size. A pixel is simply the smallest addressable element on a digital display, and its physical size depends entirely on the display's pixel density (DPI/PPI).
At 72 DPI, one pixel spans 1/72 of an inch (about 0.35mm). At 300 DPI, one pixel spans 1/300 of an inch (about 0.085mm) — nearly 4× smaller. This is why the same 600×600 pixel image appears much larger on a 72 DPI screen than it prints at 300 DPI.
How DPI Bridges the Gap
DPI (Dots Per Inch) is the conversion factor between inches and pixels. The formula px = inches × DPI tells you exactly how many pixels you need for any physical dimension at a given resolution.
For web design, 72-96 DPI is standard. For professional printing, 300 DPI is the gold standard. Understanding this relationship is essential for anyone working across physical and digital media.
Practical Implications
If you design a 600px-wide banner at 72 DPI, it will print at 8.3 inches wide. That same 600px at 300 DPI prints at just 2 inches. This is why web images look pixelated when printed — they simply don't have enough pixel density for physical output.
