Millimeters to pixels at 300 DPI converts millimeters to pixels at print resolution. 1 mm = 11.81 pixels at 300 DPI. For precision work, millimeters provide finer granularity than centimeters. 1 mm = 0.0393701 inches, so at 300 DPI, 1 mm = 11.81 pixels. Understanding millimeters and pixels

A millimeter is 1/1000 of a meter, and there are 25.4 mm in one inch. In print design, millimeters are used for precise measurements like bleed (3mm), margins, and trim areas.

To convert mm to pixels: px = mm × DPI ÷ 25.4. At 300 DPI, the formula simplifies to px = mm × 11.811.

Practical tips

  • 3mm is the standard bleed: Most commercial printers require 3mm bleed on each edge. At 300 DPI, that's 35 pixels.
  • Use mm for precision, cm for convenience: When accuracy matters (bleed, trim, registration), use mm. For general page sizing, cm is sufficient.

Select DPI for the actual output

Millimeters describe physical length, while pixels describe a raster grid, so DPI or PPI must connect the two. Use the density specified by the destination: 300 DPI is a common starting point for close-viewed commercial print, 150 DPI may suit some large-format work, and 96 PPI is the CSS reference for screen measurements. Ask the printer or production team when a specification is unclear instead of assuming that the highest number is automatically best.

The relationship is linear. A 25 mm element is about 94 pixels at 96 PPI, 148 pixels at 150 DPI, and 295 pixels at 300 DPI. A different density changes the number of samples, not the intended physical length. Include both the millimeter measurement and density in handoff notes so the receiving application or vendor does not reinterpret the pixel value at another scale.

Account for bleed, trim, and safety margins

Small metric measurements matter in print production. A 3 mm bleed at 300 DPI is approximately 35.43 pixels on one edge. Adding bleed to a document means adding it twice to each axis: a finished 85 by 55 mm card with 3 mm bleed becomes a 91 by 61 mm document. At 300 DPI, the expanded artwork is approximately 1,075 by 720 pixels before final whole-pixel rounding.

Bleed is not the same as a safe margin. Background colors and images extend through the bleed, while important text stays inside the trim line by the distance requested by the printer. Cutter tolerance, folding, binding, and finishing can require different values. This calculator converts the measurements accurately, but the production specification must supply the measurements you should use.

Handle fractional pixels consistently

Because one inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters, most millimeter-to-pixel results are fractional. Keep full precision through the calculation, then round once when a raster editor requires an integer canvas size. For a single edge, nearest-integer rounding is usually sufficient. For a repeated grid or dieline, calculate the complete width first instead of rounding every small segment and adding the rounded values, which can accumulate visible alignment errors.

A higher pixel count does not guarantee a sharper result. Source detail, focus, compression, printer capability, paper, ink, and viewing distance all contribute to perceived quality. Changing only the DPI tag may change the reported print size without changing the image data. Compare the required pixel dimensions with the original file before enlarging, and avoid presenting interpolated pixels as newly captured detail.

Limitations and assumptions

The calculation assumes that the measurement and DPI/PPI value refer to the same output workflow. It performs a mathematical conversion; it does not inspect an image file, detect a screen's density, change image resolution, or predict print quality.

Real printed or displayed size can differ because of application scaling, printer drivers, operating-system scaling, browser zoom, resampling, cropping, or device settings. Presets are illustrative and are not live device measurements.
